Radio Nova

I came across this at a recommendation of a friend online, and I've been hooked ever since - Radio Nova, a French radio station that also broadcasts online.  At first I thought it was a station geared towards France's African diasporic population, because there's a heavy rotation of soul, hip-hop, rnb, etc.  And they call themselves "Radio Métisse."  But it's in no way recognizable to U.S. listeners used to the heavily walled boundaries of, for example, "urban" or "hip-hop/rnb" stations.  In fact, look at any playlist and there's a heavy rotation of Europhile, whitefied (and, yes, good) music too.  It really is a mestizo radio station, mixing up Keren Ann with Handsome Boy Modeling School, 808 State (remember them?) with Pete Rock (remember him?  ;-)).....  (OK, the mix is predominantly from US and French influences - the occasional Latin music that surfaces is typically 70s latin jazz / rare groove stuff...)

For those of you who don't speak French, it helps to know that "C'etait quoi ce titre" means "What was that song?"  The playlist covers about 20-odd hours out of their day - the other times the music is a rebroadcast of a live show, or some other impromptu music.  And note that all songs link to FNAC, the French national media outlet - so you can literally purchase any song you hear.  Given their music library, that's pretty impressive.

For their online player list, click on "Ecouter Radio Nova".  They have a list of plugins (Real, Windows Media, QT which plays in your browser, and iTunes/ WinAmp).  If you're interested in adding the stream to your iTunes player, use this URL <http://s2.streaming.novanet.fr:80/radionova>.
